Meet Richard, your local guide

Welcome to Richards Walking Tours. Learn about Richard's journey as a retired British Columbia history teacher, proud storyteller, and passionate advocate for accessible exploring in historic Victoria.

From classroom history teacher to city storyteller

Richard is a retired BC history teacher with an enduring passion for Victoria's past. As an active member of the Storytellers of Canada Guild, stepping into walking tours during his retirement was a natural next chapter. There are no scripted megaphones or corporate uniforms here—just Richard sharing authentic tales of Victoria's heritage, colourful historical figures like the Pendray family, local Indigenous history and traditions, and eerie ghost lore from around places like Huntingdon Manor.

Island time and genuine accessibility

As someone living with a disability who sometimes guides using his own wheelchair, Richard knows first-hand how limiting mobility barriers can be. That is why every 2.5-hour tour moves at a comfortable, leisurely pace with frequent stops and accessible benches along the route. As Richard loves to remind his guests: "It's Island time; what's the rush?" Whether you use a mobility aid or simply want a relaxed stroll, you are always welcome.

A warm personal connection on every walk

Richard's tours are designed to make you feel like you are conversing with an old friend. Along with captivating stories of historic Victoria and local Indigenous traditions, Richard offers practical money-saving tips and advice to help you make the most of your stay in BC's capital city. Tours are operated on a pay-what-you-wish, tip-based model so everyone can join without financial pressure.

"Richard brings Victoria's streets alive with warmth, deep knowledge, and true kindness. The relaxed pace was perfect, and you feel as though he is speaking straight to you the whole time."
